Gratitude

Tonight, just before you have your first sip of wine or just

before you sit down to enjoy the beautiful dinner waiting

on the table, pause, and have a short reflection on the

state of this stunningly beautiful planet and your place on

it. And be grateful. Even say a little prayer of thanks that

you are about to enjoy a large hot dinner and a delightful

glass of wine. Thank God or The Force or The Universe or

The System or Whoever but simply be grateful.

There are over eight billion people on earth and three

billion don’t have enough to eat. They are hungry now and

they will be hungrier in the morning. They will be hungry

their entire lives. Try to imagine a life of constant hunger.

It’s enough to put you off your dinner.

And you were complaining again today, weren’t you? About the traffic, about the power

bill, about the lousy weather. We complain about anything, to anyone who will listen. Did

you complain about not having a nice hot shower this morning? No, of course not. You

take it all for granted, don’t you?

Yet it appears that Aussies are moaning and whingeing more and more. We hear it every

day. About the cost of living, our politicians, power bills, our roads, the crime. We don’t

hear the thanks very much these days. And what has happened to helping one another?

Instead of helping our neighbour, or even saying hello, we drive up to our garage door, the

remote does its job and we are locked in for the night. Locked in or locked up? Locked

away, perhaps. Just like your feelings.

So tonight, don’t open the bottle of wine. Do without. And then do without for a week. So

when you do open that bottle of wine in seven days, you’ll be feeling better and you really

will be truly grateful.
