I was living in London, U.K. when I first wrote “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Planet Earth”. At almost the same time, a new book appeared on the shelves, titled “The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy”. It was promoted heavily and was a bestseller! God only knows why!
It has taken me 40 years, but this is my response!
I’ve been a hitchhiker for over 60 years in at least 40 countries! The result is that with a little confidence, hitchhiking will get you around the globe and it will be free!
Your only cost will be food. Here are a few short examples of how to get on the road...
Stand in a HI Viz section of the road, wearing a ‘Day-Glo’ shirt.
Make allowance for any vehicle which may want to pull over to the roadside. Make it as easy as you can for any driver! I’ve even carried a bunch of flowers which I’ve held out to a driver (without standing on the road obviously!)
Ask yourself, ‘Would you pick up someone who looks like YOU’?
