The Wonderfully Weird World of Wilson

“Who are these noisy people I’ve never ever heard of and what are they doing in our

tipping comp?” This is the question I put to my sister Colleen a few weeks back, after

putting up with all the frivolous emails and witty comments, for 14 rounds of the AFL. It

was a very reasonable question but the answer meant there are even more “WILSONS” in

our family than I could comprehend.

Annie Lanyon is Vincent’s eldest daughter and she lives down in Port Campbell or

Portland or some place down there and Patrick is her son. Louise is her sister and she

works in Melbourne and then there is Lucille (can all this be true?) but I can’t recall where

Lucille fits in. But wait there’s more...a bloke named Dave Saunder is married to Lucy (is

this Lucille? or is Lucy another one?) A bloke named Karl is married to Louise, whose full

name happens to be Louise Cecilia Wilson, which also happens to be my Mother’s name,

which was Moya Cecilia Wilson. I think. Is it ok to presume now that we have at least 6

extra people in the Wilson clan? After all this time I think we can do better! I suggest we all

hunt around our photo albums and just check that we have all been counted. Surely we

can find another 3 or 4 if we try hard. I demand a recount! I’m not blaming Vincent for this,

101

(not at all, Vincent!) My Dad, Alec or Alexander (there was only one?) was always very

fond of his youngest brother as I recall so it’s not his fault! Now perhaps all of the above is

not correct but Colleen has done her best to advise me. No, undoubtedly it is my fault for

being out of the country for so long and not being a good listener as well. Colleen did add

that she used to play with some of you over in the paddocks where Chadstone shopping

centre now dominates. She seems to recall there were at least 4 sisters! Maybe there was

more! I am going to check with our family Historian, Ken Wilson, for verification and

clarification.

It has always been a war (or at least a battle) in the Wilson family when trying to get a

word in but this new tribe seem to be as vociferous as parrots in the bush. We will be

drowned out if we ever get together. I’m staying up here in Queensland thanks anyway.
